Biography

Ireland Native
Robert Carbery was born in Ireland.

Robert was born in 1816 in Dunnamanagh, County Tyrone, Ireland. He was the son of Hugh Carbery and Sarah Woods.

After his father's suicide, in 1826, Robert and his family emigrated -- first to Canada, and then to Boston. He was a resident of Halifax, Nova Scotia when he, his mother, and younger brother Thomas emigrated on the ship Industry on 24 July 1839. He declared that he was twenty years old and that his occupation was Trader.

He appears to have worked with his brother for a while, up through 1865 at least. By 1880, he had a business as an optician.[1]

His involvement in his brother James's 1841 Slander suit shows him picking a fight with Irish Protestants:

"On the fourth of July last, in the afternoon, a Mrs Mulholland invited Robert Carberry into Mr M’Laughlins, to take a glass of something comfortable. In the bar-room there was a tipsy man, in a talkative mood, named Linton, from the north of Ireland. Robert said to him “You, being from the north, must be a Presbyterian.” He also said something about “orangemen,” which caused an angry altercation to ensue. M’Laughlin ordered Robert out, and took down n old bayonet to enforce his orders with, threatening to make a passage through Robert’s mortal body, if he did not evacuate instanter. Mrs M’L. heard the row, and, upon joining the party, mingled in it, laid her hands upon Robert’s collar, and said to him – “I don’t want to see you or any of your family here. You are a pack of rascals. Your brother took my brother down east, and robbed him” She then shoved him out of doors. [2]
