Giuseppe Cardaropoli, who is later known as Joseph Fred Cardaropoli, is born 21 December 1881 in Bracigliano, Italy.[1] [2] His father's name is Ferdinando, according to a 1911 manifest. These records match a civil birth record found in the supplementary birth announcements for Bracigliano, 1881.
Ferdinando Cardaropoli, age 35 (b. 1846), contadino, reports the birth of a son to his wife, Felicia Petacca, in their home at via de Falco, #13, Bracigliano, on 21 December 1881. He is named Giuseppe.[3]
Giuseppe/Joseph is married to Lucia Leone, also called Lucy Lione. Based on their answers in the 1930 census, they marry when they are both sixteen, around 1897.[4]
On 2 July 1893 in Bracigliano, Giuseppe Cardaropoli, bachelor, age 21, panettiere, native resident of Bracigliano, son of Ferdinando Cardaropoli and Felicia Petalla, both residents of Bracigliano; and Lucia Leone, virgin, age 22, housewife, native resident of Bracigliano, daughter of the late Sabato Leone and the late Maria Clemente, both once residents of Bracigliano; announce their intention to marry in the civil record.[5]
Joseph and Lucy have at least seven children: Felicia (c. 1902), Pasqualina (1906) Marie/Mary (1909), Rosina/Rose (1913), Pasqualino/Patsy (c. 1915), Fred (c. 1917), and Paul (1920).
Felicia is born around 1902 in Italy, based on her age at immigration.
Pasqualina is born in 1906, based on her reported age at immigration, and on the grave marker where she is buried.
According to the 1930 census, Joseph and Lucy first immigrate in 1906 and 1907, respectively.[4]
Marie is born 9 April 1909 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Her parents live at 60 William St.[6]
In the 1910 federal census of Springfield, taken 16 April, Joseph Cardaropoli heads a household at 63 William St. He is 29 and his wife Lucy is 30. This is the first marriage for either of them. They have been married for nine years. Lucy has had four children, three living. Their children at home are Felicia, 8 (b. 1902), Mary, 1 year 3 months (b. Jan 1909), and Pascalino, a son, four (b. 1906---this is their daughter, Pasqualina). Joseph, Lucy, Felicia, and Pascalino were born in Italy and Mary in Massachusetts. Joseph and his Italian born family members immigrated in 1907. He is a laborer for the street department.[7]
Giuseppe Cardaropoli, 30 (b. 1881), a baker, appears in line 24 of the manifest of the Berlin, arriving in New York 21 March 1911. In the next lines are his wife, Lucia Leone, 30 (b. 1881), and children Felicia, 9 (b. 1902), Pasqualina, 4 (b. 1907), and Maria, 2 (b. 1909). All their lines are marked Non Immigrant Alien. They leave behind in Italy Giuseppe’s father, Ferdinando, in Bracigliano. They are going to Springfield, MA, where they are joining Antonio Nasti at 8 Union St., Springfield, MA. Antonio is reportedly Giuseppe’s brother, Lucia’s BiL, and the children’s uncle. They were born in Bracigliano except for Maria, who was born in Springfield.[8]
On 6 July 1911, Giuseppe Cardaropoli and Lucia Lione have a stillborn boy. They live at 16 Banks Pl. Giuseppe is a laborer.[9]
On 9 February 1913, Giuseppe Cardaropoli and Lucia Lione have a daughter, Rosina. They live at 18 Banks Pl. Giuseppe is a laborer.[10]
Based on his reported age in 1930 census, Pasqualino/Patsy is born around 1915.
Fred, known from the 1930 census, is born around 1917, based on his reported age.
Felicia marries Michele "Mike" Fiorentino on 3 January 1918 in Springfield.[11]
Giuseppe Cardaropoli lives at 21 Union St., Springfield, MA when he registers for the draft for WWI. He was born 21 December 1881 in Italy. He is 36. He is self employed as a baker at his home address. His nearest relative is Lucia Cardaropoli at the same address. Giuseppe is described by the registrar on 12 September 1918 as short and of medium build with blue eyes and black hair.[1]
Paul is born 25 January 1920 in Springfield. His parents live at 21 Union St.. His father and mother are both 38 years old (b. 1881) and were born in Italy. His father is a laborer.[12]
Pasqualina marries Vincent Falcone, according to her grave marker. She dies in 1928, when she is 22 years old. Her parents, who survive her, are buried with her in Saint Michaels Cemetery in Springfield.
In the 1930 federal census of Springfield, MA, taken 2 April, Joseph Cardaropoli heads a household at 21 Union St. He owns his home, worth $7600. Joseph, and his wife, Lucy, both 49 (b. 1881), were born in Italy, and married when they were 16 (m. 1897). Their children at home are Rose, 18 (b. 1912), Patsy (son), 15 (b. 1915), Fred, 13 (b. 1917), and Paul, 10 (b. 1920), all born in MA. Joseph immigrated in 1906 and his wife in 1907. He is a bread maker in a bakery.[13]
Lucy dies in 1937, according to the grave marker.
Joseph Fred Cardaropoli registers for the draft for WWII. His birthdate is a match for the WWI registration of Giuseppe Cardaropoli. He lives at 21 Union St., Springfield and is 61 years old. He was born in Bracigliano, Naples, Italy on 21 December 1881. His nearest relative is Maria Cardaropoli at the same address. He is not currently employed.The registrar describes him on 26 April 1942 as 5’4” and 182# with blue eyes, black hair, and a light complexion. He has a scar on the right temple.[14]
Joseph dies 9 November 1966[15] at age 84.[16] He is buried in Saint Michaels Cemetery in Springfield with his wife, Lucy, and daughter Pasqualina (1906-1928).
Paul, age 51, marries Elaine J. Cianchini on 20 August 1970 in Enfield, CT.[17]
Paul dies 30 March 2004 at age 84. His last residence is in Agawam.[18]
