Biography

Jimmie Lee Carden was born on 1 Dec 1937 in Bartow, Polk County, Florida. His mother, Lorena Grimes Carden, was from a pioneer cattle ranching and farming family that had come to the area nearly 100 years before Jimmie was born. Jimmie's father, Paul, was drafted into the U.S. Army after the outbreak of World War II and stationed at Camp McCain, in Grenada County, Mississippi. There, the family lived in the nearby community of Duck Hill until Paul was discharged in September 1945. Afterward, they moved back to Polk County, Florida, building their home at 3450 E Main Street, just east of Lakeland (now gone). In the late 1940s, Jimmie moved out of his parents' home to live with his uncle Tom Carden. At age 14, he began working as a cowboy for Lykes Brothers south of Lake Istokpoga, near the town of Lake Placid, Highlands County, Florida. After buying his first car in 1954, at 16 years old, Jimmie and a childhood friend traveled to Michigan to pick apples, where they stayed for nearly a year. After returning home to Polk County in 1955, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and later became a veteran of the Korean Conflict. In 1958, he married for the first time to Aurelia Retha "Rae" Kuenzel. Jimmie and Rae had five daughters. They separated in the late 1960s, formally divorcing in April 1972.[1] On 25 August 1972, he married Mary Frances Marino.[2] They had one son together, Michael Kevin "Kevin" Carden, in 1973. Jimmie, Mary, and Kevin lived next-door to Jimmie's parents' house until March 1978, when they moved to the Green Swamp area east of Polk City, Florida. Jimmie retired from the construction industry (as a drywall and carpentry contractor) in 1999. Jimmie and Mary bought a home on 6.5 acres of land near Chatawa, Pike County, Mississippi, and moved in 2003. Mary died exactly one week before what would have been their 43rd wedding anniversary. Jimmie died at home a little more than four months later, on 26 December 2015, due to metastatic pancreatic cancer.[3] In accordance with his wishes, his body was used as a research cadaver at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and subsequently cremated in 2017.
