Biography

Thomas Cardwell was born November 18, 1741, in Prince George County, Virginia, a son of Richard Ambrose Cardwell 1719-1780 and his wife, Susannah Legrand. Thomas is remembered in his father's Will, probated in April, 1780.

  • Item: Give to my son Thomas Cardwell, one feather bed and furniture, one cow and calf, one sow and pigs and two ewes and lambs and five hundred pounds cash to be paid as soon as possible it cold be raised to him and his heirs forever.

Thomas' father appointed Thomas' elder brother, Daniel as one of the Executors to his estate.

  • I do also appoint my son Daniel Cardwell, George Cardwell and my wife Susannah Cardwell to be Executors and Executrix of this my last will and Testament

Dinwiddie County, Virginia was created 27 February 1752 from Prince George County. In 1767, in Dinwiddie county, Thomas married Obedience Thweat a daughter of Henry Thweatt, Jr. and Obedience Giles. Thomas died prior to 1782, according to the tax lists. Obedience last appears on the the Dinwiddie tax lists in 1795. She moved to Halifax county, where she is said to have married secondly her brother-in-law, Daniel Cardwell.

On January 26, 1789 in Dinwiddle county, Thomas' children brought suit against their mother and Henry Thweatt as administers of his estate. His minor children were appointed guardians. From Dinwiddle County Virginia Court Order Book, 1789-1791:

  • p. 5 - 19 Feb 1789 - Jane Cardwell, orphan of Thomas Cardwell, deceased, made choice of Henry Thweatt for her guardian.
  • p. 5 -19 Feb 1789 - Henry Thweatt is appointed guardian to Elizabeth Carwell, orphan of Thomas Cardwell, deceased.
  • p. 9 -16 Mar 1789 - William Cardwell, Henry Cardwell, Jane Cardwell, Thomas Cardwell, and Elizabeth Carwell, infant orphans of Thomas Cardwell, deceased, against Henry Thweatt and Obedience Cardwell, executors of Thomas Cardwell, deceased.
  • p. 9 - 16 Mar 1789 -- Henry Cardwell and Thomas Cardwell, orphans of Thomas Cardwell, deceased, made choice of Henry Thweatt for their guardian
