Henrietta was born in North Carolina in 1817. She was the daughter of Joel Cardwell and Mariah Scales. In 1836 Henrietta married Greensville William Penn and together they were parents of eight children. They were prosperous farmers and moved their family westward. They settled in Talladega, Alabama for many years then moved on to Fayette, Texas where Henrietta passed away in 1872 at age 55.
