George was the grandson of clockmaker Francis Careswell of Shrewsbury.
He was born about 1812 in Deal Kent but moved to Aberystwyth in Wales with family. He carried on various businesses including cabinetmaker, proprietor of houses, licensed victualler, a professor of music and proprietor of The Circulating Library at the Assembly Rooms . He married Jane Bevan in 1833 [1] and they had four children before she died at the age of 40 in 1852.[2] He remarried to Emma Mary Browne [3] who was previously married and had her own children. They initially lived in Shrewsbury where George ran function rooms. He became bankrupt in 1860.[4] By the 1861 census he was back in Aberystwyth and in 1871 working as an agent for a brewery. In 1881 (aged 70) he was a commercial traveller.[5] He died in 1883 [6] leaving about £600.[7]
