Biography

She was born in about 1518. She married unknown Hall in about 1545 [1] They had several children, one of whom, John, is specifically mentioned in his uncle Sir Francis Carew's 1611 will [2] She died in about 1580.

Research Notes

Her mother Elizabeth (Bryan) Carew died in 1546, and her will is accessible to support this. This previously quoted date of her daughter's death is suggested to have been a confusion.

"the Lady Dame Elizabeth Carewe of Wallington in the parish of Beddington, Surrey, widow" made her Will on 16th July 1541 in which she made bequests to:
  • her daughter the Lady Darcie, wife of Sir Arthur Darcie, knight
  • her daughter Isabell Carewe
  • her daughter Anne
  • her son Francis
  • her mother
  • her servants
  • executors and residuary legatees William Saunder of Ewell, gent and John Skynner the elder of Reigate, gent
  • overseers - her brother Sir Francis Bryan, knight and Arthur Darcie, knight

There is no mention of either a daughter Elizabeth Hall/Carew or any husband and children.

Assuming the Visitation is correct, and there is an error with one of Elizabeth's siblings : instead of "Mabell" being the wife of 'Wim Saunders of Ewell" it should be 'Isabell the wife of Nicholas Saunders of Ewell', then Elizabeth must have died before her mother made her Will on 16th July 1541 (probate granted 17th July 1546). https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D950702

Added parents as Nicholas & Elizabeth (Bryan) Carew, as they had a daughter Elizabeth & they were married in 1514. Elizabeth (Bryan) Carew's will was dated/proved 1546, so the death date for this Elizabeth Carew would be either before or after, depending on whether or not she was named in the will. Her father Nicholas died 1539 & Richardson shows Elizabeth as the wife of _____ Hall - probably from being named as daughter Elizabeth Hall in one of her parents' wills.
