Richard Carew (1555–1620), antiquary and poet, was born on 17 July 1555 at Antony House, Torpoint, Cornwall, the eldest son among the three children of Thomas Carew (c.1527–1564) and his wife, Elizabeth Edgcumbe.
He matriculated Christ Church Oxf. c.1566 and was admitted to Clement’s Inn and theM. Temple 1574 but did not take a degree or was admitted to the bar. He m. 1577, Juliana, da. of John Arundell of Trerice, 7s. 3da. suc. fa. 1564.
He was sheriff of Cornwall 1582-3 and MP for Saltash in 1584 and Mitchell in 1597, where he also was a bailiff.
He d. at his study at Antony on 6 Nov 1620 and was buried in the crypt of the parish church the next day.
