James was born in 1879. He is the son of John Carey and Susan Watkins (per death certificate). He immigrated to Key West from the Bahamas in 1891 with his sister, Lillian Carey.
In 1900 they were living with a cousin, Charles Richardson, and his family in Key West. James was working as a sponge fisherman.[1]
By 1910, James was head of household living in Key West. His sister, Lillian, and an aunt, Margaret Artmer (Culmer?), were living with him.[2]
In 1918, James registered for the WWI draft. He listed Mamie as his nearest relative, and his occupation as car repairer. His physical description was noted as short and slender, with blue eyes and light hair.[4]
In 1920, James and Mamie had their own household, with Lillian living with them along with two aunts and a cousin. James was working as a carpenter.[5] The household included:

The couple and their children were still in Key West in 1930. The other family members were no longer living with them. James was a laborer on a "dredge boat."[6] The household included:

They were all still together in 1940. James was now working for WPA as a carpenter.[7]
James passed away in December 1957 in Key West[8], and was buried in the Key West Cemetery on Dec 9, 1957. After her death, his wife was buried beside him.[9]
