In 1899 Carey & Browne organized the lrgest auction of coffee in human memory; 13121 bags sold in three days.
In the 1930s the firm had become Woodhouse Carey & Browne
James Edward Carey and family lived at first in Dalston, Hackney
In 1821 the population of Dalston, embracing Dalston Lane and its offshoots, was 1,366. By 1831 building lined Dalston Lane eastward to the hamlet, itself extended almost to Hackney brook by Navarino Terrace on the south side and Dalston Rise (until 1875 also the name of a section of the lane) on the north.
