William was born about 1861 in the Bahamas. His parents may possibly have been Michael Carey and Matilda Charlow, as there is a birth record for a William Dierman Carey born in the Bahamas on 12 Dec 1861.[1][2]
He married Lillian Watkins, daughter of John Watkins in the Bahamas on 09 Jun 1885. They were both minors, according to the marriage record, but birth records suggest they were at least 21. William's unnamed father was deceased and he had no guardian. William worked as a teacher at a public school. They were married in the home of Lillian's father, John Watkins, in St James, Pear Cay, Bahamas.[3] They had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth aka Mamie, and possibly another child who died.
By 1900, Lillian had remarried to Abraham Carey. It is not yet known if William died or they divorced.
There is a grave for a W D Carey in the Key West Cemetery, Key West, Monroe County, Florida, which may possibly be this William D Carey's grave. It would fit with his wife remarrying in 1900, as the year of death was 1897.[4]
