Biography

Hugh Carey was born in Old Cumnock Ayrshire about 1844 but his family moved to nearby Auchinleck while he was still an infant. Hugh's father was originally a brick maker but found work in Auchinleck as a miner and Hugh eventually worked as a miner as well. He also worked as a miner in Springburn Lanark where he married in 1867. Hugh and Mary moved to Stevenston Ayrshire in the mid-1870s where Hugh worked as an iron miner and eventually as a pit oversman. One census also lists him as a frame sawyer. Surprisingly, his death registration lists his occupation as retired draper.
