Biography

Ellen (Carey) Payne has Irish ancestors.

Ellen was born in 1845 in Joliet, Illinois. Her parents, Irish immigrants, traveled great distances to find a better home, from Illinois to Massachusetts to Wisconsin. They eventually settled near Wisconsin Rapids (which was then called Grand Rapids.)[1] Ellen worked as a servant girl starting around age 13.[2]

According to the record of her son Elmer's marriage, she was known as Nellie. Note that her daughter and a granddaughter were named Nellie also.

She married Silas Payne after he returned from the Civil War. They took up farming, and later moved to the city, where they ran a boarding house/hotel. With just 1 servant girl, 8 children and 5 or more boarders, Nellie had her hands full.[3] See Silas's profile for more information about the family.

She passed away in 1902 from a stroke, at the age of 56.[4]

From her obituary:
Mrs. Silas Payne, who was stricken with apoplexy on the 28th of January, died on Friday morning about 5 o'clock. During much of the time since her sickness she has been in a semi-comatose state, but suffered considerably just before her death. ...

Mr. and Mrs. Payne had been residents of Wood county for many years, having lived on a farm four miles west of the city until about four years ago, since which time they have resided at South Centralia where they engaged in running a hotel.

The funeral occurs on Sunday afternoon from the M.E. church.
