Biography

Joseph was born on July 6, 1911 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, the son of Thomas Carey and Mary O'Donnell. He had one brother, Walter (born 1913), and one sister, Geraldine (born 1916).[1]

Joseph married Janet D. Bacharach in 1940 in the Bronx, New York City. Joseph and Janet had one daughter, Sara Ann.

Joseph also had two sons, Joseph and Thomas.

Joseph died on July 31, 1961 in Hartford, CT. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Yonkers, NY.

Joseph and his parents moved multiple times during his youth, a result of his father's job as a contractor, which took him to cities such as Baltimore, St. Louis, and other locations. [2] Census records have the Carey family living in Brooklyn, NY in 1915 [3], and in Baltimore, MD in 1920. [4]

By 1925, the family had moved to 432 W. 260th Street in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx, [5] where Joseph lived through high school. By 1930, Joseph's father, Thomas, had left the family. At this time, Joseph worked as a clerk for an insurance company. In 1930, the family lived at 6119 Liebig Avenue in Riverdale, as Joseph and his immediate family had been joined by his mother's sisters, Julia and Kathleen. [6] In 1940, Joseph continues to live with his mother and brother, now at 434 West 259th Street. Now living with them are four young girls, all listed as "Lodger" in the census sheet. Joseph now works as a Machinist in the "Oil Burner" industry, but only worked 12 weeks in 1939, earning $300. [7]

Joseph enrolled as a member of Battery F in the 258th Field Artillery of the New York National Guard on March 30, 1932 (and reenlisted in 1935 and 1938). [8] During this time, Joseph traveled for two-week trainings at Fort Oswego on Lake Ontario in 1933, 1934 and 1936. [9]

Joseph enrolled for the draft on October 16, 1940 in Kingsbridge, Bronx, NY. He is listed as being white, 5'9", 150 lbs., with blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion. His employer at the time was Arthur J. Phelan of 360 South Broadway in Yonkers, NY. [10] Joseph was honorably discharged from the National Guard in December 1940 to re-enlist the following day in the Army. He was marked as "A-US" under the 1940 Selective Service Act. Joseph spent time stationed at Fort Ethan Allen in Vermont [11] and at Madison Barracks (Sackets Harbor), NY. <Article dated August 8, 1941 in Yonkers Statesman Herald, accessed at FultonHistory.com</ref> Per family lore, Joseph also worked as a prisoner of war camp in South Carolina, supervising Italian prisoners of war, but he never was deployed overseas because he had flat feet. [12] Joseph was honorably discharged on September 2, 1945, having reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. [13] He was awarded the Good Conduct medal during his service. [14]

While serving in the Army, Joseph married Janet D. Bacharach, the daughter of Abraham Bacharach and Daisy Cohen, on June 23, 1940. They had one daughter, Sara.

Joseph also had a relationship with Eileen Gertrude Devaney, with whom he had one son, Thomas. He also had a son, Joseph.

Joseph died unexpectedly at age 50 in 1961, in Hartford, Connecticut, where he had been working as a steamfitter. Per his obituary, he lived at 267 St. Johns Avenue in Yonkers. He was a member of Local 2 of the Steamfitters Union at Watertown, NY, and the La Rabida Council of the Knights of Columbus, and was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers, NY. [15]

Joseph was buried on in St. Mary's Cemetery in Yonkers. (Plot - Saint Ann's P 5 G 8) [16]
