Mariah Carey is an American mega-star recording artist, winner of dozens of awards, and the first artist to have her first five singles all reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[1]
Mariah Carey was born on Long Island, in Huntington, New York. Her father, Alfred Roy Carey, was of African American and Venezuelan (including Afro-Venezuelan) descent. The last name Carey was the product of a name-change by her Venezuelan grandfather, Francisco Nuñez, after emigrating to New York.
Her mother, Patricia Hickey, is of white Irish descent. Patricia's father died while she was young; however, she inherited his passion for music. She developed a career as an occasional opera singer and vocal coach, and met Alfred in 1960.
As Alfred began earning a living as an aeronautical engineer, the couple wed later that year, and moved into a small suburb in New York. After the pair's elopement, Patricia's family disowned her, due to marrying a man of color.
During the interval of years in between Carey's older sister Alison and the Mariah's birth, the Carey family experienced personal struggles within the community due to their ethnicity. When Carey was three years old, her parents divorced due to the increasingly strenuous nature of their marriage.
Mariah Carey married Tommy Mottola in New York City on June 5, 1993 during a half-million dollar ceremony at Saint Thomas Church.
On 25 Nov 1993 "Mariah Carey All the Way," was a TV special that highlighted Mariah's life. [2]
Her next relationship was with singer Luis Miguel, and that lasted from 1998 to 2001.
She met Nick Cannon on an island off the coast of Antigua. They were married on April 30, 2008 in the Bahamas. In the same year, Mariah suffered a miscarriage. At 35 weeks into her next pregnancy, she gave birth to their fraternal twins, Moroccan and Monroe, on April 30, 2011, via Cesarean section. (The twins are her only children to date). In August 2014, Cannon confirmed he and Carey had separated. He filed for divorce on December 12, 2014, which was finalized in 2016. [3]
In 2015, Carey began dating Australian billionaire James Packer and, on January 21, 2016, she announced they were engaged. By October, however, they had called off the engagement.
In October 2016, she began dating American choreographer Bryan Tanaka and were seen together as late as November 22, 2022.
