Research Notes

In June 1917 William is working in Montana. An Etta Agnes Tryon is found in 1916 personnel files of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company, Yellowstone Division, Glendive, Montana, working as a waitress. The record says she is Irish, born 8 Nov 1889, Michigan, not married, mother Mrs. A N McKinnon of Wisconsin. There is an Etta McKinnon, age 12, in the household of A N McKinnon, in the 1900 census of Summit, Waukesha, Wisconsin, b. Nov 1887 in Wisconsin, mother (Mary) married 6 yrs and has 7 children so this is second marriage, i.e. McKinnon is not Etta's LNAB. Children range 7-19 and father from NY, mother from WI (A N McKinnon is from Canada). It sure looks like her except for the not married part and mother's name.

In 1920 William was working in Washington state and he died there a year later. Etta was not noted in records as being with him but presumably living since he was listed as married, not widowed. I find then Etta A. Andrus in the Washington, U.S., Select Death Index, 1907-1960, age 71, d. 4 Sep 1959, Port Angeles, Clallam, Washington, Father: David Carey, Mother: Mary Coullard. Looks like her again but must have remarried to an Andrus.

Alvin D. Andrus and Etta appear in the 1940 and 1950 census in Port Angeles, WA. Etta A. and Alvin D. Andrus appear in city directories in Port Angeles, 1929-1950. In 1952 she is widow of Alvin but in 1954 they both appear again at same address,136 E 12th. There are two Etta Andrus in Port Angeles.

Alvin Dewey Andrus died 21 Nov 1955 in Port Angeles [1]. His grave stone says husband of Etta A Andrus [2].

Oddly, Alvin is in the 1930 census, right age, same location, and occupation, but is single, even though they both show up in directories from 1929 together.

Tying this all together it appears Etta Agnes "Hattie" Carey was the daughter of David Carey and Mary Ellen Coullard. David and Mary split before 1894 and she and siblings live with their father, David, then. In 1900 she and some siblings live with their mother, Mary, in the household of A.N. McKinnon whom Mary may have married (no record). Hattie married William Tryon in 1909 and they are still in Minnesota in 1910. By 1916 they are living in Montana and by 1920 William is in the Seattle area and likely Hattie is also. William died in 1921 and Hattie married Alvin D Andrus by about 1929 in Port Angeles, WA. She died in 1959.

The FindAGrave memorial for her father David has a more extensive bio of her parents' lives [3].
