Biography

Elizabeth Veal Cargeeg was the daughter of William Cargeeg and Elizabeth Grenfell. She was christened on 15 July 1859 at Pendeen.

Elizabeth is also recorded as Elizabeth Peal & Elizabeth Keal on familysearch.org and Elizabeth Vaul Cargig on NZBDM Index.

Her mother passed away in 1863 and it was 12 years later when William, her stepmother Selina and 3 of her siblings arrived in Otago on the ship 'William Davie'. The passenger list records, William, Selina, William Jr, Lilla (Leila), Henry, John, Selina & Elizth V.

William Cargeeg had remarried in 1863 to Selina (nee Trembath) Maddern.

Elizabeth and her family settled in the township of Oamaru. Her father was employed in the construction of the 'breakwater'. He became ill in his later years and moved to Christchurch with Selina.

Elizabeth Cargeeg was 21 when she married James Stuart Anderson at St Pauls, Oamaru in 1881. Eight children were born during the marriage, Elizabeth 1881, James Stewart 1883, William Andrew 1884, Selina 1886, Allan Clarence 1888, Willamina 1890, Richard Henry 1894 and Lillia 1896.

Elizabeth died in 1946^[1] aged 90 and was buried on December 12 at Oamaru Old Cemetery, Presbyterian section - BLOCK 80, PLOT 39.40.
