Biography

Charles Guy Cargill. He was born in Newbury, Vt., 24 May, 1845, son of Guy C. Cargill of Lancaster, NH. He m. 1 July, 1869, Sarah Isham Cowles (b. Peacham, Vt., 13 Sept., 1847, dau. of John Osgood & Laura Aurelia (Harmon) Cowles of Coventry, Vt.). They lived in Waterford, Vermont. Dr. Cargill was educated at Peacham Academy and at Kimball Union Academy in Meredith, NH. He attended Norwich University and also Dartmouth Medical College. He enlisted from Hartford, Vt., 18 Sept. 1862 in Co. "H", 16th Vt. Regiment. He was only 18 years old at the time. He was mustered in as corporal 23 Oct., 1862. He mustered out 10 Aug., 1863. He removed to Waterford Vt. in June, 1869. In Jan., 1871, they moved to Peacham. In Nov., 1872, Sarah and Dr. Cargill moved to California and settled at San Juan Bautista.

He was a deacon of the Congregational Church and superintendent of the Sunday School. He was the town treasurer and served in the Vermont Legislature three times on many important committees. He was a skillful physician, kind to the poor, and the throng of people who followed his remains to his final resting place proved beyond doubt that he was well loved by his community. He d. 18 June, 1900. (no children).
