Biography

Not too much is known to my Missouri family about our grandmother because of her death at a young age.

Apparently her parents were to some extent itinerant farm workers during her childhood and had either settled in Harding County, N.M. or at least had a home base there.

It is unknown where my Grandfather met Thelma, but as Earn's uncle was a Dr in Roy, N.M. it is likely they met through that relationship. In any case they did meet and were married in New Mexico in 1923.

During the next 6 years they had 3 sons there in new Mexico. Thelma died a few days after my father was born from complications of the delivery.

She is buried alone in the Roy cemetery.

The following are clips taken from the Roy, New Mexico newspaper. "THE SPANISH AMERICAN".

February 5, 1921. Miss Thelma Caris, the popular assistant at the Roy post office, returned to her position again Tuesday after taking a month's vacation from her work. Mr. Branch has been clerk in the office during Miss Caris' vacation and will take a few weeks' rest and then will probably take up a position as railway mail clerk.

May 14, 1921. The Misses Gladys and Cora Hern, Maud Kern, and Thelma Caris and Leslie Busey attended the dance at Springer last Saturday evening and all report a dandy time.

August 6, 1921. Miss Thelma Caris has resigned her position as assistant Postmaster at the Roy post office. The resignation took effect Monday morning. Miss Thelma has been in the Roy Office for over two years and has made many friends while in the office who are sorry to see her leave the wo |rk. We are informed that Miss Thelma is making plans for a new position.

December 3, 1921. The Baptist Sunday School Auxiliary Class was entertained last Tuesday evening by Mrs. Minnie Rhyne at the V. V. Caris home, the class elected new officers for the coming quarter which are as follows: Mr. Halfield, President, Miss Marion Cope 1st V. Pres., Miss Emerson 2nd, V. Pres., Mrs. Weatherill 3rd, V. Pres. Miss LeIda Schnell. Sec. and Miss Thelma meeting was over, Madames Rhyne and Caris served a dainty lunch which was appreciated by all present.
