Maria Carkner was born on June 30, 1811, in Bethlehem, New York, her father, Wilhelm, was 39, and her mother, Anna, was 24. She married James McCourtie on October 4, 1827, in Wolcott, New York. They had seven children in 13 years. She died on April 30, 1898, in Boone, Illinois, having lived a long life of 86 years, and was buried there.
