Ninetieth Birthday

MR. P. CARLE, of CUNDLETOWN From our correspondent Mr. P. Carle, Cundletown's oldest citizen, attained the great age of 90 years last week, while his wife reached 87 years. Mr. Carle has been bed-ridden for the past nine months, so the members of the Cundletown Methodist Ladies' Church Aid gave the dear old folks a surprise birthday party on Wednesday last. A most beautiful cake was made by Mrs. B. Stein and presented to the guests. The cake was decorated by Mrs. S. Carle. As it was impossible to have such a large number of candles on the cake the figures 90 and 87 were worked into the decorations.

OBITUARY

MR. PHILLIP CARLE

In our last issue we mentioned that Cundletown's oldest resident, Mr. Phillip Carle, had been honored on the occasion of his 90th birthday, and we now regret to record the fact that the old gentleman passed away on Friday afternoon after an illness extending over the past nine months. Up till the end of last year he enjoyed exceptionally good health, never having had a serious illness during his long life. About last December he spent a week in the Mayo Private Hospital, Taree, but his trouble was too deep-seated to encourage any hope of eventual recovery, and since then he has been confined to his home, where he passed away at 2 p.m. on Friday.

He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs C. Carle and was born in Adelaide 90 years ago. At the age of 16 years he came to Cundletown with his parents, his father being a cabinet-maker. After leaving school the subject of this notice adopted his father's calling, and for some years had a cabinet-making and undertaking business in Cundletown. Shortly after his marriage to Miss Harriet Unicomb (a daughter of the late Mr .and Mrs. Geo. Unicomb, of Jones Island) he moved his home to a farm property he owned on the Dawson River, and here he remained until 32 years ago, when he returned to Cundletown to live in retirement in his own home in Mayne street.

The late Mr. Carle was held in respect by a wide circle of friends in the district. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Church, and was regular in his attendance at worship. He also took a keen interest in sport, and was a constant spectator at football, cricket and tennis matches, in which his children participated with considerable success. His death removes one of the best known identities of Cundletown, and one whose kindly, unassuming nature won for him the goodwill of all who came into contact with him.

He is survived by his widow, who has been handicapped with blindness for over 20 years, and the following children: Messrs. Charles Carlo (Dawson River), Geo. Carle (full-time, duty with the VDC), Phillip Carle (Taree), Arthur, Victor and Stanley Carle (Cundletown), Mrs. Herbert Minett (Cundletown), and Mrs. Harold Eggins (Taree). One son, Robert, died at the age of 12 years, and one daughter, Mrs. S. Billingham, of Taree, also predeceased him.

He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, viz., Mr. Robert Carle (Taree), Mr. Arthur Carle (Urunga), Mrs. Louisa Clerke (Tinonee), and Mrs, Annie Lee (Taree). Amongst the brothers who predeceased him were John Carle (Bohnock), Charles (Old Bar), Alex. (Clarence River), Peter (Richmond River), and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Ochs (Tinonee). Six other members of the family passed away in early life.

At 1.30 p.m. on Saturday a service was conducted at the Cundletown Methodist Church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Dawson cemetery. Rev. W. S. Beazley conducted the services at the church and graveside, and Mr. W. T. Howard carried out the funeral arrangements.

Carle-1765 and Carle-362 appear to represent the same person because: they have approximately the same death date and place, and the same approximate birth date.
