Arthur Carless was baptised on 12 April 1773 at St. Philip's[1] in Birmingham, to parents Benjamin Carless and Ann Cook.
Arthur married Mary Hollis on 19 August 1800 at St. Martin, Birmingham. The witnesses were John Perrins and Wm Loynes, the latter being the clerk so no relation to the family. The baptisms of later children show that Arthur worked in the brass trade, one of Birmingham's most dominant trades. The couple had six known children, all born in Birmingham and baptised at St. Philip's church:
William Carless was born on 8 April 1808.[2] He later married Ann Mills. He initially worked as a caster, probably working in the brass trade with his father, but later became a glass bead and button maker.
Ann Carless was born 27 March 1815 on Hospital Street, which was in the northern part of Birmingham.[5] She later married Thomas Mottram, a builder.
Benjamin Carless was born on 13 March 1817 on Hospital Street.[6] He later married Susannah Jukes and worked as a glass cutter, possibly with his older brother William.
Elizabeth Carless was born on 6 July 1819 on Hospital Street.[7] She later married William Checkley, a button stamper.
Arthur Carless was probably buried on 28 November 1830 at St. Philip, Birmingham, of Fleet Street.[8] The record stated his age as 36, yet he would have been about 56, but the rarity of the name, and the recording of the death at Fleet Street, where his son William lived, suggests that the age was written incorrectly.
Research Notes
CRIMINAL RECORDS: An Arthur CARLESS appeared in October 1819 at the sessions for Walsall, accused of larceny, and sentenced to two years imprisonment. The unusual name makes this likely.[9]
