Biography

Josiah Carleton was born in 1770, the son of Micah Carleton and Sarah Bailey.[1] On 24 May 1798, he first married Susannah Ela. She was born at Haverhill on 21 Mar. 1780, the daughter of Jonathan Ela and Susanna Hunkins.[2]

Josiah and Susannah lived in Plaistow, NH, where the had seven (or eight) children:

  1. Josiah, b. 8 Aug. 1802; m. Mary Ann Foss, 25 July 1824; d. 4 Apr. 1861
  2. Susannah, b. abt. 1805; m. Chadbourn Foss, 18 Mar. 1824
  3. Amos, b. 12 Feb. 1807; m1. Merriam Hoyt, 1834; m2. Hannah Brickett, 25 Apr. 1847; d. 13 June 1885
  4. Jonathan, b. 21 Nov. 1809; m1. Jane Akerman Holland, 23 May 1833; m2. Eliza Holland, 24 June 1863; d. 18 Apr. 1886
  5. Robert, b. 1 Jan. 1812; m. Sarah P. Eaton, 31 Dec. 1846; d. 24 Feb. 1881
  6. Moses, b. 2 June 1814; m. Abigail Sargent, 8 Nov. 1846; d. 7 Mar. 1899, and
  7. Hiram, b. 2 Mar. 1818; m. Abigail Williams; d. 23 Mar. 1891.

Josiah's wife Susanna died in 1819, and he re-married with her sister Hannah Ela. Marriage intentions were issued in Haverhill, MA on 29 Oct. 1820.[3] Josiah and Hannah had one child:

  1. Mary Jane, b. 24 Apr. 1822; m. James M. Day; d. 1840 (no children).

Josiah was recorded on the 1820, 1830 and 1840 censuses for Plaistow, NH. He lost his second wife shortly after the 1840 census was taken. In 1850, he was recorded on the Plaistow, NH census, living in the household of his son Amos.[4]

Josiah passed away in 1856, at the age of 86.[5] He was buried in Plaistow, NH cemetery.[6]
