Private James Carlile served with Upper Ninety-Six District Regiment, South Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

James was born in 1763. James Carlile ... He passed away in 1842.

He moved to America 1768-1769 to 96 District, SC. While residing in Ninety Six District, he volunteered on 25 Nov 1780 and reported to Grindal Shoals on 25 Dec 1780 and was placed under Capt. James Caldwell, Lt. Francis Carlisle (his brother), Col. Pickens and Gen. Morgan. He was in the battle at Cowpens and guarded the prisoners as they moved toward the mountains. After releasing the prisoners to the Virginians, he returned with Pickens to harry the Tories and to cut off British supplies. He was in the siege of Ninety Six. Afterwards, he went to guard the frontier under Capt. Francis Carlisle and Maj. Noble. [1]

James Carlile (Carlisle), Margaret, widow, Revolutionary War Pension, W8583, SC Service, and Agency, [2] (B. Ireland). Soldier's Certificate 31674 issued from 4 May 1831. Act of 7 June 1831 for $36.66 p. a. Widows' Certificate 8695 for $36.66 p. a., issued from 4 March 1843.

Ann Carlile, Abbeville District, South Carolina, 19 February 1846, deposed she was the oldest surviving child of James and Margaret Carlile of Abbeville District, South Carolina, and a true copy from the Family Register in her father's writing in an Old Confession of Faith, showed the parents James Carlile, born 23 May 1763 and Margaret Carlile, born 27 January 1762 were the parents of eleven children:

Margaret Carlile, on 18 Mar 1857. 93 years old, resident of Abbeville District, SC, deposed she was the widow of James Carlile, deceased marred in Abbeville District, SC, 15 October 1789 by John Harris M. G. , (Presbyterian), was Margaret Boles; husband died 9 April 1842, Abbeville District, South Carolina. (She made the same deposition 14 Sep 1849. James Carlile, age 76, applied for a pension 12 October 1839, was born in Monaghan County, Ireland 23 May 1763; moved to America in 96 District, SC, 1766-1769, age father's Bible, now in possession of widow of deceased brother; volunteered in Revolutionary War in District 96, now Abbeville District, where he resided ever since; volunteered on 25 Nov 1780. 1780. Frances Carlile, Abbeville District, SC, deposed 14 Sep 1849, that she married her late husband, John Carlile, the eldest child of James and Margaret Carlile, on 15 Feb 1821.
