Family lore accounts Walter as a rounder and a scallywag. In the 1900 Census for Kent County, Michigan, Helen indicates "." for the number of years married. She was living with her parents and her children at that time and Walter was missing.

Despite my searching genealogy records and civil records for several years Walter's final situation is unknown. I must presume, at this time, that Walter changed or hid his identity and died under another name. DNA may resolve the question.

March 11, 2021: I found a 2nd-3rd cousin on AncestryDNA whose great-grandfather is "Wallace Cooper Carlile," who gave different ages in public records. He appears to be about the same age as Walter and 17 to 27 years older than his wife. I think I have found his second identity!
