Birth

Ann's birth is not clear. It's possible her birth was not registered but more likely the surname was mangled. Her parents were probably not literate and the family moved about a lot so the children's birthplaces are somewhat variable.

1861 Census

The Carlisle family was living at Trafalgar Court, Palmers Hill, Monkwearmouth Shore in 1861 though their surname was not clear and almost every transcription was incorrect. ^[1]

The Carlisle family was living at Marley Hill in the parish of Whickham in 1871. The places of birth of the adults had changed as well as some of the children. ^[2]

1881 Census

In the 1881 census William (age 37), Coal Miner, was the married head of household at 22 Red Rows, Witton Gilbert, Durham, England. He lived with his 2nd wife (some believe this to be a bigamous marriage), daughter Sarah Ann, mother-in-law and niece. ^[3] Note that the niece Mary Ellen was baptised at Pelton, Holy Trinity, daughter of John and Ellen Carlisle on 26 Jan 1870.

1891 Census

In the 1891 census Wilson (age 47) was living with his 2nd wife Ann Carlisle, 4 children and his mother-in-law at 13 Watsons's Buildings in Edmondsley, Durham, England. ^[4]
