Elsie was born in late 1903 in Bethnal Green[1]. She was the daughter of Charles Carlow, a horsehair carder, and Sarah Carlow, née Boreham.
Elsie married James Jackson Brown in London in 1947[3][7]. "Jim" was a doctor, originally from Jamaica[8], and twenty years older than Elsie, with children from a previous marriage.
Some time after Jim's death in 1953, Elsie went to live in Strood, Kent. She was living at 40 Watling Street, Strood, when she died at St Thomas's Hospital, Lambeth[6], of breast cancer[8] on 12 January 1966[4][5].
The net value of Elsie's estate was calculated as £4387. Elsie left all her personal effects to her eldest niece, Kathleen Davey. Then a third of the estate was left to four of Jim's grandchildren (Jacqueline, Monica, Elizabeth, and David Brown), with the rest being divided among Elsie's sister Sarah and her nieces Kathleen and Jeanne[6].
