John Bede was the eldest son of Irish immigrants, James and Ellen Carlton. He was born on 12 or 18 December 1841 at Wollombi.
He married Catherine (Kate) Fitzgerald at Dungog on 18 October 1865, and shortly after, they settled at Cowper on the Clarence River in northern NSW. John Bede was referred to as 'J.B.' on the North Coast.
J.B. and Kate had 11 children, 3 of whom died in infancy: Adelaide Carlton (later Sr Mary Veronica) Mary Carlton (later Sr Mary Borromeo) James Ryan Carlton John Bede Carlton Jr Kate Fitzgerald Carlton (later Kate Russell) Anne Jane Carlton (later Sr Mary Bridget) Daniel Fitzgerald Carlton Vincent Joseph Carlton Thomas Hamilton Carlton Ellen Carlton (later Ellen McDonnell) Agnes Mary Carlton
In 1874, John fell from his horse near his home and broke his collar bone. From 1874 to 1876, Mr Carlton, Justice of the Peace (JP), was Mayor of Ulmarra. He ran for council again in 1881. He passed away in 1923.
