Biography

Puritan Great Migration
Edward Carleton immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640 and later departed for Yorkshire, England

Edward Carleton, Gent., son and heir of Walter Carleton, Gent. and Jane Gibbon, was baptized at Beeford, Yorkshire on 20 October 1610.[1]

Edward married on 3 November 1636 at St. Martin-Micklegate, City of York, Yorkshire, to Ellen Newton.[2] Ellen was baptized in Yorkshire in 1614, the daughter and co-heiress of Launcelot Newton and his wife Mary Lee.[1] They had two sons and two daughters:

  • Lieut. John,[1] born in England about 1637, died in Haverhill, Massachusetts 22 January 1668, married Hannah Jewett[3]
  • Edward,[1] born 28 August/October 1639 in Massachusetts,[4] probably died before 1661 in England.[3]
  • Mary,[1] born 2 April/June 1642,[5] probably died before 1661 in England.[3]
  • Elizabeth,[1] born 20 April/June 1644,[6] probably died before 1661 in England.[3]

Edward, Ellen and John arrived in New England in 1638 aboard the ship John of London with a group led by Ezekiel Rogers.[7] The ship sailed from Hull, England to Salem, Massachusetts during the summer of 1638.[8] They settled at Rowley, Massachusetts and Edward was made freeman of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1642.[1] Edward was among a group of men who surveyed the town of Rowley in 1643 and received a 3 acre house lot on Holmes Street.[7][9] He served as Deputy of the General Court for Rowley from 1644-1647.[1][7]

Edward returned to England before 24 January 1648/9 and was living there 22 May 1651. He died, presumably in England, before 27 November 1678,[1][10] which appears to be the date an undated deed was filed in Massachusetts. The deed, most likely signed before Edward went back to England, transferred Edward's land in Rowley to Henry Sewall.[3]
