Biography
It is quite likely that Mary was illegitimate, and her father was probably a 'Mr. Armstrong'[1]. She was given her mother's (Mary Thomson) surname when she was born, and after about three years, was given her stepfather's surname, 'Carlyle'.

- Also Mary Thomson, his wife, who died at Kilnknowe 28th April 1931 aged 83 years.
- Also Mary Irvine Johnstone, sister of the above R.S.Johnstone, younger daughter of the late Thomas Johnstone, Beechhill, who died at Watchhill 20th November 1934 in her 89th year.

Hi Mary Thomson Carlyle was not the daughter of John Carlyle she was living with him and his wife Mary Ann Harkness in 1851 at the Howgill Annan . Yes she was illegitimate but i have matched Carlyle's by DNA . John Carlyle and Mary Ann Harkness were actually her grandparents and living with them was customary of what occurred with illegitimate children . Her mother was Mary Thomson but her real father was John Thomas Carlyle 1827 to 1911 nothing known about her mother but her father moved to Canada and remarried in Ontario .
