John Carlyle (1720-1780) was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, England, the second surviving son of William Carlyle, an apothecary-surgeon, of a landed Scottish family from Dumfrieshire descended from the Lords Carlyle of Torthorwald and Rachel Murray of Murraythwaite, Dumfriesshire.
He m. (1) in 1747, Sarah Fairfax (d. 22 January 1761), cousin of Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron and (2) aft 1761 Sybil West, daughter of prominent Alexandrian Hugh West.
His son George William Carlyle (1766-8 Sep 1781) d. at the Battle of Eutaw Springs. His grandson John Carlyle Herbert by his da. Sarah Carlyle Herbert was his heir.
