Biography

(Joseph?) Cornelius Carmichael was born between 1690 and 1702, in Scotland and died circa 1780, in Mifflin Co., Pennsylvania

In 1727, in Scotland, Cornelius married Isabella (?nee) born before 1713, in Scotland. Children of Cornelius and Isabella include: *John Carmichael b: 19 JAN 1727/28 in Apinshire, Scotland

  • James Carmichael b: 1733 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania
  • Daniel Carmichael , Ensign b: 1736 in Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania
  • Mary Carmichael b: 1747 in Lancaster, Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania

Research Notes

The only information on this family came from the same family tree with no citations. There is even a Find A Grave memorial with the same information and no citations. Joseph and Isabella are unlikely names for Scotland and the couple could be from Northumberland.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Cornelius by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Cornelius:

Carmichael-685 says this person was known as Cornelius and also Joseph Cornelius. Plus there is no location called Apinshire in Scotland. There is a glen called Appin. Please provide references for your profile.
Carmichael-685 and Carmichael-154 appear to represent the same person because: There is no record in Scotland's People for (Joseph) Cornelias.
Carmichael-685 and Carmichael-154 do not represent the same person because: Insufficient support for merging.

David,

Have you reviewed the Notes section on Carmichael-685? I agree that initially I didn't think these profiles were meant to be the same person and neither profile has normally reliable sources, but unfortunately, that is not required for the 1700s.

In Carmichael-685:

  • Name fields in biography have Joseph Cornelius as well as Cornelius.
  • The S76 Source is from Mifflin Co, Pennsylvania, which this profile has as a death location.
  • The Notes section explains that the person is sometimes stated as Joseph Cornelius. It also discusses the sons that are linked in that profile, as well as moving from Pennsylvania to Virginia

If you google Apinshire Scotland or look in Scotlands Places, which is the site used by Scotland Project for information on locations, there is no Apinshire, Scotland. The biography of the profile can state that the birth location is not certain, as Scotland, Ireland, or Pennsylvania, as stated on some sources.

Comparing the profiles completely, they do seem to have meant to be the same person, so they should be merged. Before merging, I would recommend 'cleaning up' Carmichael-685 to remove the gedcom format so the biographies will be easier to merge, but I don't want to revise it until a better review is done by you of that profile so you will see it with the information and format as entered.
