Obituary

Sarah E. Combs, daughter of John and Susan CARMICHAEL, was born Nov. 12, 1840, at Cincinnati, Ind., departed this life May 15, 1918, at her home in Bloomfield, Ind., aged seventy-seven years, six months and three days.
In 1857 she was united in marriage to Pleasant Combs, of Cincinnati, Ind., which union was broken after thirty-four years by the death of the husband in the home from which the wife's body, twenty-seven years later, was borne to the tomb. Three children came to bless the home: one son, Edward, died in infancy; the other son, Martin L., passed away July 1, five years ago. The daughter, Mrs. Mary A. WARREN, of Petoskey, Mich., survives her mother and was present to lend her ministry to a much beloved mother during her last suffering.
"Mother" COMBS also leaves two grandchildren, Mrs. Jessie BAKER, of Petoskey, Mich., and Mrs. Bertie RAMSEY, Bloomfield, Ind., two brothers, S.E. CARMICHAEL, DeLand, Fla., and Jno R. CARMICHAEL, Conway, Ia., and three sisters, Amanda RIDDLE, Bloomfield; Luda MEREDITH and Mary E. YOHO, both of Center township, this county.
The subject of this sketch was converted when fourteen years of age at Hebron Baptist church. To this experience she bore glad testimony through her long life.
Upon coming to Bloomfield thirty-seven years ago she, with her husband united with the Methodist church. Her devotion to this church and her Lord, as the community well knows, has be constant and tender.
In 1891 she became on of the charter members of the Bloomfield auxiliary of the W.F.M.S., which today is one of the strongest societies of Souther Indiana. Later she became one of five to raise the banner of the society in her church. Her going leaves the four loyal to this banner and expecting some chice spirit to take "Mother COMBS' place.
Known and respected as few of this county, "Mother" COMBS life came to its close in the hotel of which she became proprietor upon coming to this place thirty-seven years ago, and in which capacity she has constantly served to the satisfaction of a large patronage. She has befriended a multitude, who today rise up to bless her name.
The funeral ceremony was held in the Methodist church last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev J.D. SMITH officiating. The last sad rites at the church and cemetery were largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends.[1]
