Biography

James was born in 1786. James Carnaghan ... He passed away in 1856. [1] The Carnaghan Family grew flax in Ireland. Armagh county or Armagh ( unknown) .James immigrated to England ( unknown date ) He worked at Green Row Academy as assistant to the Head Master Joseph Saul (.There is reference to someone else driving the horses ,after James had left for Canada, so it would be safe to assume he wasn't a teacher .) Green Row was located near Allonby ,Cumberland ,England. Daniel Beeby was a school master . Noted on Sarah 's birth cerificate. His wife was Jane Taylor. They were Quakers . James and Sarah immigrated to Canada in 1831, with four children, (Daniel,Elizabeth, Adam and Joseph ) They came up the St Lawrence to Quebec , then took a steam packet to Montreal (3 day journey) Then a Durham Boat drawn by Oxen ( 7 days) up the St Lawrence to Presket. Then a Scouner to sail Lake Ontario to York. Then by wagon to Old Kingston Road . James worked as an Inn Keeper ,saving enough money to purchase a farm in 1837. Homesteading on the North 100 acres of Lot 16 Concession 1, along the east side of Scarborough Golf Club Road. James had a large family. five boys and 2 girls who died in early childhood and one daughter who married. He appears to have enjoyed prestige among his neighbours, as he was appointed Constable in the Home District by the Honourable Simon Washburn, and was called up to serve in the defence of York in the Rebellion of 1837.
