Biography

Margaret was born on 30 March 1897 to Andrew Carnegie and Louise Carnegie.

The June 1905 New York U.S. State census[1]shows Margaret residing with her family in East 91st Street, Manhattan, New York, United States of America.

The April 1910 census[2]shows Margaret continuuing to reside with her family in East 91st Street, Manhattan.

Margaret disembarked[3]with her father Andrew Carnegie and mother Louise Carnegie in New York from[4]SS Mauretania after arriving from Liverpool, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom on 17 October 1913. At the time of arrival the family's address is noted as East 91st Street, New York.

The June 1915 New York U.S. State census[5]shows Margaret continuuing to reside with her family in East 91st Street, Manhattan.

Margaret[6][7]married[8]United States Navy Ensign Roswell Miller on 4 April 1919 at the home of her parents Andrew Carnegie and Louise Carnegie, in Manhattan. The couple honeymooned in California, United States of America before spendinsome time also in[9]The Berkshires.

The January 1920 census[10]shows Mrgaret residing with her in laws family in Washington, Duchess County, New York.

The April 1930 census[11]shows Margaret residing with her family in Crossroads, Washington Township.

The April 1940 census [12]shows Margaret residing with her family in East 91st Street, New York.

The April 1950 census[13]shows Margaret residing with her husband Roswell Miller on the Miller Estate off Route 343, Washington, Dutchess County.

Margaret passed away aged ninety three on 11 April 1990 and was laid to rest[14]in Creich Cemetery, Little Creich, Sutherland, Scotland, United Kingdom.

New York Times Obituary - Margaret Carnegie Miller Published April 21, 1990

'Margaret Carnegie Miller, the only child of Andrew Carnegie, the steel manufacturer and philanthropist, died on April 11 at her home in Fairfield, Conn. She was 93 years old.

From 1934 to 1973 she was a trustee of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the grant-making foundation established by her father in 1911. From 1973 until her death she was an honorary lifetime trustee.

She was born March 30, 1897, to Mr. Carnegie and Louise Whitfield, whom Mr. Carnegie married when he was 51. Mr. Carnegie died in 1919. Mrs. Miller's marriage to Roswell Miller ended in divorce. She is survived by one of her four children, Barbara M. Lawson of Cranby, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren'.
