↑Araminta Steele Obituary: LaHarpe Newspaper 23 Dec 1892.
Mrs. Araminta Steele died at her home in LaHarpe at 9:15 o'clock, p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 1892, of pneumonia, after a brief illness, at the age of seventy two years and fifteen days.
Mrs. Steele's maiden name was Araminta Carnes and she was born near Zanesville, Ohio, on Dec. 1, 1820. She was married to Mr. John Spiker in Ohio and afterwards they moved to Illinois, in or near 1840, where she has lived most of her life. Twelve children were born to them, eight of whom are living, four dying previous to her. Those who are living are five girls and three boys (Thomas, William, and Charles). The girls are all nearby residents of this vicinity, and the boys reside in Tennessee. In 1855 she was married the second time to Mr. Wm. Steele, by which union one child was born, John Steele, who has faithfully supported his mother in her old age. She was a member of the Methodist Church and always tried to live a Christian life. The funeral took place on Sunday Dec. 18, at the Wesleyan Chapel three miles east of this city, the services being conducted by Rev. J.D. Green. There was a large attendance at the burial of sympathizing friends.
