In 1852 at age 4 Mary Ann and her family left IA on a wagon train for Oregon. Her father and bother both died on the trip. She and her mother continued to Oregon where her mother married John Wesley Benefiel, who lost his wife on the same wagon train trip. Mary Ann was raised by John W. and Leacy and may have been know as Mary Ann Benefiel as is seen listed in some sources. Mary Ann Carnes married Perry Larkin who also made the trip but with a different wagon train.
