Biography
John C. Carney, Jr., was born on 20 May 1956 in Wilmington, Delaware,[1] a son of John C. "Jack" Carney, Sr., and Ann (Buckley) Carney.[2]
He graduated from St. Mark's High School, in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1974 and went on to attend Dartmouth College, graduating in 1978 with an A.B. degree. He became a football coach at the University of Delaware, where he earned a Master's degree in Public Administration in 1987.[1]
Political Career
He served on the staff of U.S. Senator Joseph Biden, Jr., of Delaware, from 1986 to 1989; then became the chief administrative officer for New Castle County, Delaware, from 1989 to 1994. He joined the staff of Delaware Governor Thomas Carper in 1994, serving until 1997, when he became finance secretary of Delaware (2997-2000). In 2000 he won election as lieutenant governor of Delaware. He served in that office from 2001 until 2009. In 2010 he was elected as a Democrat to the 112th Congress. He served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, from January 3, 2011 to January 3, 2017. [1]
In November 2016 he won election as the 74th Governor of Delaware. He took office in January 2017 and is in office as of May 2021.[1]
