Louis (Ludowici, Hludowic) is a younger son of Louis IV 'd'Outre-Mer (Transmarinus), King of France, of the Carolingian dynasty, and his wife Gerberga of Saxony.
His birth and baptism with the same name as his father, by Artald, Archbishop of Reims, is recorded as the very last entry for the year 948 in the Annals of Flodoard. (Nascitur regi Ludowico filius, quem praesul Artoldus de sacro fonte suscepit, patris ei nomen imponens).[1] Given the exact account of Flodoard's Annals this must be during the month of December.[2]
Louis died in 954 at Laon (Ludowicus, filius regis, Lauduni defungitur). Flodoard mentions his death just before a description of the sickness and death of his father at Reims,[3] which we know from other sources occurred on 10 September 954.[4]
