David Luther Carpenter was born January 7, 1826, in Schenectady County, New York, the son of Abraham and Ruth Carpenter, natives of New York, who settled in Schenectady County as early as 1807.
From a family of eleven children, David was reared in his native state, and in 1846 he came with his brother, William Carpenter, to Kane County, Illinois, and in October 1847, he was married to Harriet Arnold Brady, a daughter of John B. Brady, of Kane County, formerly of New York City. She died in December, 1853, leaving three children—Howard, Charles D. and Lorenzo D. Mr. Carpenter was again married in September, 1857, to Amanda Malvina Underhill, of La Salle County, and to this union were born four children—Willet K., Harriet, Abraham L. and Jessie Elizabeth Carpenter (Neighbour). Records also show that they later adopted a child, Martha White.
In December 1849, the family left Kane County and came to La Salle County, where for many years David conducted a nursery. His original purchase in La Salle County was one quarter section, and meeting with good success he eventually acquired at least 205 acres of highly cultivated land. He served as Supervisor and Assessor of Manlius Township, as well as Treasurer of the Board of Highway Commissioners. During the Civil War he was the enrolling officer of Manlius Township. In politics he was a Republican.
