Biography

Abiah Carpenter was born in 1643, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, the son of William Carpenter and Abigail Briant. [1]

Conflict of Birth Dates

Question: If Abigail and Abiah are twins, why were the born 14 years apart?

Answer: Zubrinsky states that the notion that Abigail and Abiah were twins came about through the misreading of the will of William Carpenter by Amos Carpenter in his 1898 publication. Abigail was baptized in Shalbourne, England, in 1629,[2] and she was married to John Titus about 1649. Had she been Abiah's twin, she would have been six at the time of her marriage. There is no concrete evidence for a twin of Abiah.

Abiah settled in Pawtuxet (now Warwick) between Jul 1,1661 and Jul 12,1663. He died there after Dec 14,1687, and probably before Dec 26,1689, and certainly before Mar 22, 1698/9.

He married, by 1667, probably at Rehoboth, Mary Redway. According to NEHGR, Vol 159, pp.55-64, it is likely that Abiah remarried after Mary's death, but evidence has not yet been found. It has been said that he married a sister, Abigail, of Ann Wickes/Weeks, possibly at Musketa Cove, Long Island during a brief residence there in 1670, but no concrete evidence exists.

Children (by first marriage): Oliver Carpenter, and, almost certainly, Rebecca Carpenter.

Children (probably by a second marriage to an unknown wife): Joseph Carpenter.
