Biography

Levi was born in 1818. He was the son of Josiah Carpenter and Lois Bullock. [1] He passed away in 1831 at the young age of 18 and is buried in Strongsville Cemetery, Strongsville, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. [2]

Research Notes

  • Three of the Carpenter siblings, (e.g. William, Leonard and Levi) are reported to have been born in (or near) 1818 in Porter, Niagara, New York. This is a time when the family, having left Vermont, was laid up near Buffalo while the oldest brothers were in Ohio preparing the family farm in Strongsville. According to Lucy Strong and Tamzen Haynes, [3]
"Mr. Carpenter, with his sons, Zachary and Caleb, in company with the families of Eliakim Lyon and J. S. Strong, started for Ohio, driving an ox team carrying goods for Mr. Strong. On reaching Buffalo, Zackery Carpenter and Stoughton Strong took the boat for Cleveland. Soon after the party had reached Strongsville, Mr. Josiah arpenter bought 309 acres of land at $4 per acre in the southeastern part of the township, after which he returned to Vermont. During the summer, Zachary and Caleb cleared six acres for wheat and built a log house. They bought in Cleveland a barrel of pork for twenty-five dollars and a cow for twenty-eight dollars. In October, Mr. Carpenter returned with the remainder of his family."
In putting the pieces together, the data from various sources have been factored against this history.
  • William - In the Descendants of William Carpenter, [1] he is said to be "born about 1816/1818. He died on 28 Nov 1887." In a more detailed section it says he was born in Niagara, NY. However, in the GENi Genealogy [4] he is said to be born on August 29, 1791 in Massachusetts. Fortunately for us, his grave marker [5] makes it clear that the latter is correct. It gives his date of passing as 10 Nov 1870 and gives his age as "79 YRS 2 MOS & 11 DYS."
  • Leonard - In the Descendants of William Carpenter, [1] he is only said to be born in 1818. There are two places of birth given in the details for Leonard. One is Niagara, NY and the other Strongsville, Ohio. Without knowing the exact date of birth either of these could be true. Will leave at Niagara, NY at this time.
  • Levi - In the Descendants of William Carpenter, [1] his date of birth is given as 11 December 1818 and his place of birth is given as Strongsville, Ohio. With the family leaving New York for Ohio in October of that year, this appears to be correct.
