John Wesley Carpenter was born on November 29, 1823, in Columbia, Meigs County, Ohio to Jeremiah Carpenter and Sarah Ann Simpson. He married Clarissa H Bingham on January 1, 1845, in Meigs, Ohio. They had eight children in 18 years. He died on October 6, 1892, in Meigs, Ohio, at the age of 68, and was buried there.
