Phebe Carpenter was born about 1711 in Westchester, New York, the daughter of Silas Carpenter and Jane Thorncraft.[1] Phebe is mentioned in her father Silas Carpenter's will. Silas Carpenter died after Jan 3, 1728 in North Castle, Westchester, New York. He was buried before Feb 1, 1728 in North Castle. A will of the New York Historical Society Collections Volumes found states in abstract:
"In the name of God, Amen. January 3, 1728/1729, I, Silas Carpenter of North Castle, in Westchester County, Blacksmith. I leave to my wife, Jane, one-third of all moveables. All houses and lands to be sold. I leave to my daughters, Hannah and Phebe, 10 pounds each when of age. The rest to be put at interest until my three sons, William, Timothy, and Silias, are of age and then divided among them. I make William Craft and William Carpenter, Jr., both of Long Island, and my wife, Jane, Executors. Witnesses, Adam Ireland, Job Wright, Nataniel Carpenter. Proved Feburary 1, 1728/1729."[2]
Phebe married Caleb Gilbert in 1730 at Southampton, Suffolk, New York, who was born at Southampton in 1700. She died at Southampton, 25 Nov 1739, and was laid to rest in the North End Burial Ground, Southampton.

Following Phebe's death, Caleb removed, before 1744, to Orange County, New York, and settled in or near the town of Cornwall. Some of his children were by his second wife, whose name is not known. In an old deed recorded in Orange County, he is called "carpenter."
