Biography

Gershom Carpenter served in the 5th Regiment of Lincoln Militia, Canada in the War of 1812

[page 9]Gershom CARPENTER, second son of Ashman and Mary (Boyle) CARPENTER, also settled in Saltfleet. He, with his brother, John, received a Crown Grant for Lots 16-17, Concession II but in 1808 he lived on Lot 13, Conc. I...He died in 1845, and with his wife Sarah (Petit) Carpenter is buried in St. Andrew's churchyard, Grimsby. Published by The Grimsby Historical Society, 1953, revised and reprinted 1983.

During the War of 1812, Gershom Carpenter served as a captain in the 5th Lincoln Militia. He was stationed at Burlington Heights with his company from September 17 to October 24, 1813. [1]

Did he serve in an additional regiment or corps during the war?

On September 26, 1815, he made a war claim, as a yeoman of Saltfleet Twp., for an ox which was impressed and died while in service on August 24, 1814. John Lewis of Grimsby certified the claim. [2]

The 1818-1819 Saltfleet Twp. Assessments recorded his name.

In 1824, he resubmitted his war claim as a resident of Saltfleet Twp. [3]

1799 Upper Canada Land Petition
Petition of Girsham Carpenter and John Carpenter of the County of Lincoln
That your petitioners came into this province with their late Father, Ashman Carpenter, in the year 1788. Soon after which their said father became sickly and unable to provide for his family. That your Petitioners during their Father's illness (and after his death which happened in the year 1789) by their labour and industry supported their Mother and her large family. and still continue in their duty towards her as the annexed certificate vouches.
That your Petitioners Father having been assigned 500 acres of land by the late land board for this district (400 acres of which was located) your Petitioners always considered that the same would dissolve to them - but an elder brother (Alexander) having several years after their father's death came into the province without ever having contributed to the support of his parents or their large family, lays claim to an exclusive right in all the real property.
That the title being still in the Crown, no deed having issued, your Petitioners pray that your Honor will assign day for the parties to appear before your Honor in Council to prove facts and enable your Honor's order a division conformable to Equity and rights and that your Honor may at the same time permit the location of the 100 acres remaining unoccupied agreeable to the certificates of the land board here with submitted to your Honor and your Petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
