Richard Carpenter was born about 1575 in Cornwall, England. The identity of his parents is currently not known. He may be the Richard Carpenter baptised at Phillack, Cornwall, on 16 February 1575/6, son of Thomas Carpenter[1] but other than that being possible both geographically and date wise, more evidence would be needed to say this for certain.
He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford, on 28 May 1592, and took his degrees of B.A. on 19 Feb. 1595–6, B.D. 25 June 1611, and D.D. 10 Feb. 1616–17. [2] He was elected to a Cornish fellowship at his college on 30 June 1596, and retained it until 30 June 1606, during which time he devoted his attention, under the advice of Thomas Holland, the rector of Exeter College, to the study of theology. He became a noted preacher. [3]
In 1606 he was appointed by Sir Robert Chichester to the rectories of Sherwell and Loxhore, near Barnstaple, Devon.
While he was a tutor at Oxford, among his pupils was Christopher Trevelyan, a son of Sir John Trevelyan of Nettlecombe, Somerset. It may have been through this connection he met and married Susanna Trevelyan his pupil's youngest sister. Their marriage took place on 1 September 1606 at Nettlecombe, Somerset. [4] Their known children were:
Their first child Susanna was baptised in her mother's home parish of Nettlecombe; John and Mary the next two children were baptised at Shirwell, Devon where their father was the rector. Sarah was baptised at Loxhore, Devon; another of her father's parishes. The other baptisms have not yet been located.
Richard died on 18 December 1627,[5] and was buried in the chancel of Loxhore Church on 20 December 1627[6], where a monument was erected to his memory.[7] The Exeter College records add to this that he matriculated at the age of 15.[8]
Richard left a detailed will dated 9 August 1625 describing himself as Richard Carpenter, professor of Divinity and pastor of Sherwell in the county of Devon.[9] He made bequests to and mentioned:
Early Carpenter books have Richard Carpenter to be the son of William & Abigail Carpenter. However this is wrong. [10]
It has also been suggested that he was the Richard Carpenter who from 1601 to 1626 held the vicarage of Collumpton. However, this person is said to have had a son Henry, who went on to become a canon of Sarum and a canon of Windsor. If this were the case, he would have been mentioned in Richard's 1625 will - which he wasn't.

This Richard Carpenter was not the Richard Carpenter[8] of Amesbury, Wiltshire, father of William Carpenter[9] of Providence, Rhode Island.
Nor should he be confused with Richard Carpenter (vicar of Poling). This Richard was at Kings College, Cambridge, in 1622, twice lived in Europe for a few years and was vicar of Poling from 1635 to about 1642. He married in middle age and finally settled not in Amesbury but Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire, where he died about 1670.[10] SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Carpenter_(theologian)#Family
