Biography

Richard Carpenter was born about 1575 in Cornwall, England. The identity of his parents is currently not known. He may be the Richard Carpenter baptised at Phillack, Cornwall, on 16 February 1575/6, son of Thomas Carpenter[1] but other than that being possible both geographically and date wise, more evidence would be needed to say this for certain.

He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford, on 28 May 1592, and took his degrees of B.A. on 19 Feb. 1595–6, B.D. 25 June 1611, and D.D. 10 Feb. 1616–17. [2] He was elected to a Cornish fellowship at his college on 30 June 1596, and retained it until 30 June 1606, during which time he devoted his attention, under the advice of Thomas Holland, the rector of Exeter College, to the study of theology. He became a noted preacher. [3]

In 1606 he was appointed by Sir Robert Chichester to the rectories of Sherwell and Loxhore, near Barnstaple, Devon.

While he was a tutor at Oxford, among his pupils was Christopher Trevelyan, a son of Sir John Trevelyan of Nettlecombe, Somerset. It may have been through this connection he met and married Susanna Trevelyan his pupil's youngest sister. Their marriage took place on 1 September 1606 at Nettlecombe, Somerset. [4] Their known children were:

  1. Susanna Carpenter
  2. John Carpenter
  3. Mary Carpenter
  4. Richard Carpenter
  5. Ann Carpenter
  6. Elizabeth Carpenter
  7. Edward Carpenter
  8. Sarah Carpenter
  9. Thomas Carpenter

Their first child Susanna was baptised in her mother's home parish of Nettlecombe; John and Mary the next two children were baptised at Shirwell, Devon where their father was the rector. Sarah was baptised at Loxhore, Devon; another of her father's parishes. The other baptisms have not yet been located.

Richard died on 18 December 1627,[5] and was buried in the chancel of Loxhore Church on 20 December 1627[6], where a monument was erected to his memory.[7] The Exeter College records add to this that he matriculated at the age of 15.[8]

Career

  • Rector of Sherwill, 1605.[8]
  • Rector of Georgeham, 1606.[8]
  • Rector of Loxhore, 1611.[8]

1625 Will

Richard left a detailed will dated 9 August 1625 describing himself as Richard Carpenter, professor of Divinity and pastor of Sherwell in the county of Devon.[9] He made bequests to and mentioned:

  • my wife Susan Carpenter, daughter of John Trevelyan of Nettlecombe, Somerset, dec
  • my son John, a student at Exeter College, Oxford
  • my eldest daughter Susan
  • my daughter Mary
  • my second son Richard
  • my third daughter Ann
  • my fourth daughter Elizabeth
  • my third son Edward
  • my fifth daughter Sara
  • my fourth son and youngest child Thomas
  • my brother John Carpenter of Salisbury
  • my three sisters Jane, Ann and Agnes
  • Sir Robert Chichester

Research Notes

Early Carpenter books have Richard Carpenter to be the son of William & Abigail Carpenter. However this is wrong. [10]

It has also been suggested that he was the Richard Carpenter who from 1601 to 1626 held the vicarage of Collumpton. However, this person is said to have had a son Henry, who went on to become a canon of Sarum and a canon of Windsor. If this were the case, he would have been mentioned in Richard's 1625 will - which he wasn't.

Carpenter-150 and Carpenter-20 appear to represent the same person because: The dates and place names are wrong, but this is clearly a duplicate of the Richard Carpenter Susan Trevelyan marriage. Will also propose a merge for the wife.
Good morning Project Managers. The England Project has identified this profile of Richard Carpenter as needing major work and Project Protection to avoid further conflation with other Richard Carpenters. I will send a Trusted List request from the England Project account to make the EP comanager. Please accept this and the England Project will do the rest of the set-up. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this.

WARNING! - No relation!

This Richard Carpenter was not the Richard Carpenter[8] of Amesbury, Wiltshire, father of William Carpenter[9] of Providence, Rhode Island.

Nor should he be confused with Richard Carpenter (vicar of Poling). This Richard was at Kings College, Cambridge, in 1622, twice lived in Europe for a few years and was vicar of Poling from 1635 to about 1642. He married in middle age and finally settled not in Amesbury but Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire, where he died about 1670.[10] SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Carpenter_(theologian)#Family

Carpenter-18120 and Carpenter-20 appear to represent the same person because: Carpenter-18120 appears to be an incomplete duplicate version of the original Carpenter-20. Spouse and child entry also need merged with their respective matches.

Did Post-merge edits and changes based on notes. RH, I don't understand some of the brackets you put in, but I left them.

Any references to Amesbury or Wiltshire should be under Disambiguation and refer to the other Carpenter groups. That portion including "Caution" still needs work. That's where possible future merges or non-merges need to be identified.

I rewrote the Wikipedia article in Oct 2008. Please use that as a guide for clean up, adding spouse and children.

The children of Richard and Susanna Carpenter were:[6] 1) Susanna Carpenter, bp. Nettlecombe, 28 Oct 1607.[7] 2) John Carpenter, b. ca. 1608. 3) Mary Carpenter, b. say 1610. 4) Richard Carpenter, b. say 1612. 5) Ann Carpenter, b. say 1614. 6) Elizabeth Carpenter, b. say 1616. 7) Edward Carpenter, b. say 1618. 8) Sarah Carpenter, b. say 1620. 9) Thomas Carpenter, b. say 1622.

This Richard Carpenter was not the Richard Carpenter[8] of Amesbury, Wiltshire, father of William Carpenter[9] of Providence, Rhode Island.

Carpenter-19 and Carpenter-7698 do not represent the same person because: 2 different people - This has been discussed before. Briefly, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Carpenter_(theologian) and compare http://carpentercousins.com/carplink.htm (William b. abt 1605)

This entry 7698 has so many problems it needs to be deleted. Do not merge junk.

Any merge will cause erroneous data to creep back in better genealogy.

posted by John R Carpenter
They are obviously the same person; the unsourced errors should be fixed. Same for Abigail -- the one with errors has no sources. Merges would allow corrections to both.

Carpenter-5881 and Carpenter-20 are not ready to be merged because: unmatching info
There are several Richard Carpenters which are mixed up. Until the mess is resolved, recommend no merges.
posted by Jack Day
Carpenter-5881 and Carpenter-20 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, these appear to be duplicate profiles of the same individual and should be merged based on the vital statistic data. Thank you.
Oops, this profile is horribly scrambled. Richard Carpenter, the theologian and husband of Susanna Trivilian, is a completely different person from this Richard Carpenter. Maybe it was a bad merge, but now it's a mess :-(
