Biography

Genealogically Defined

Luman was born in Surry, New Hampshire, to William Carpenter and his wife, Abigail (White) Carpenter.[1] Luman was the first of the couple's fifteen children. They lived together on the Carpenter Homestead in Surry, New Hampshire, and helped their parents work the prosperous farm.[2][3][4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Luman married Lucy Maria Cushing, born on October 7, 1836, in Leroy, New York, on March 14, 1860, in Surry, New Hampshire. She was the young widow of Hiram Murdock.[3] They had one child, a son, Ernest William Carpenter born five years later.

Luman was a farmer in Surry, New Hampshire.

He was a farmer, merchant, and postmaster in Surry. Surry, New Hampshire, is, and was, a very small town with a low population. Many men of the town would serve in the governing of the town; some were elected for numerous terms. He was elected Treasurer for 4 years.[9] Luman also served as Selectman during the years 1871-1875, 1880-1882, 1884, and 1886-1891.[10]

Luman died on July 24, 1901, in Surry, aged 62. He was buried in Surry Village Cemetery, Surry, New Hampshire.[11]
