Research Notes

Family tradition from daughter Thomas was born in "Alexander" Indiana. As the Carpenter family has roots in this general area of Indiana, I take this as Alexandria, Indiana, as grandma only lived in Indiana as a child.

  • pedigree chart prepared about 1970. My mother and grandmother were both alive at the time and I would have gotten the information from one of them.
  • "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MNHX-C96 : 24 December 2015), Thomas Carpenter in household of Mary Carpenter, Akan, Richland, Wisconsin, United States; citing enumeration district ED 229, sheet 4D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1445; FHL microfilm 1,255,445.
  • I have a certified copy of the marriage certificate for Thomas James Carpenter and Sarah Matilda Puckett from the clerk of the circuit court of Marion County, Indiana. The citation is Vol 22/465. Note the name "james" instead of "jefferson". Petersen-1298 15:13, 15 September 2014 (EDT).
    • Extract:Certificate of Marriage, Marion County: I the undersigned Minister, do hereby certify that Thomas James Carpenter and Sarah Matilda Puckett were legally joined together as Husband and Wife, on the 30th day of April-1890; Rev. M.B. Hyde. Vol 22/465.
    • I will assume, until I have further documentation, that the middle name was actually Jefferson. This is how my grandparents remembered him. It does seem likely that 'James' was the middle name at birth and 'Jefferson' was a name affected later in life.
