Biography

Richard Oliver (great-grandson):

My great-grandfather’s middle name came from his mother’s family - Mary Golden, of Rotherham (whom see). In his baptismal record it is shown as Goolding, and his mother's people show a variety of other spellings) Riley (Junior, as I should call him) is the first of my direct ancestors about whom I find almost nothing to write, and I lack even a photograph. No doubt such existed, but my grandmother’s photo album will have disappeared in the destruction of the family home in a German air raid on London, in the early 1940s.

His occupation in life was as a “saw maker and book-keeper” in his father’s flourishing steel business. Riley's father (Riley Senior) died in July 1865, and his will was proved the following January. Riley Junior, and his two younger brothers, each received two-elevenths of their father's rather considerable wealth, estimated at around £60,000. Riley - still unmarried at 48 - suddenly became a rather eligible bachelor. It is noteworthy that he was married within a year, and to a twenty-four year-old girl from the house next-door. Would that one could know the background to this match!

In any case, he contrived to sire four children, and to style himself “gentleman”, before dying at sixty-two. Riley passed away on 2 Jun 1879. (by Richard Oliver, 2023) <
