Son of William Carr b.1763 RI & Lydia Hopkins of South Kingstown, RI. A Revolutionary War soldier, William Carr and 4 of his children died in a yellow fever epidemic in 1804. Lydia survived to pay off her house and raise 3 young children. She later relocated to Otego, NY to live with son Rowland. She died in RI while visiting from NY. Lydia is reputed to be a close relative of RI Gov. Stephen Hopkins 1707-1785, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The inscription on his tombstone reads:
"No mortal can his worth impart
Tis written on our bleeding heart
with more than human skills:
In memory lives his virtues still."
